25 May INTERNATIONAL ONLINE CONFERENCE- REGULATING AI IN THE EUROPEAN UNION -Friday,11 June 2021
Regulating AI in the European Union – An Unfolding Agenda-
The EU has engaged in systematic efforts to regulate Artificial Intelligence and provide the “first ever legal framework for AI” globally (EC Press Release, 2021). The Commission has been facilitating a years-long dialogue with the Member States, experts and stakeholders, to promote trustworthy AI.This year, on April 21st, 2021, the Commission published its proposal for an “Artificial Intelligence Act”,a Regulation laying down harmonized rules on AI.
The conference aims to assess the current proposal and discuss both the legal issues that the proposal has covered and those pending , pursuant to the many topics that the EU legislators have been considering since 2018: the current proposal on harmonized rules for the placing AI systems on the EU market, including prohibitions and specific requirements for high-risk AI systems, and current and future needs to address data governance, consumer protection, labour and tax law issues as well as the more specific questions around liability frameworks.
The conference is the closing event of the Jean Monnet Module ‘Liability of Robots: A European Visionfor a New Legal Regime’.
